Trial Bay Gaol

Highlights

Step back in time and explore the fascinating history of Trial Bay Gaol! This old prison was built in 1886, and even though it’s a jail, it’s surrounded by stunning coastal views. It’s like being in a history book with a beachside twist! You’ll learn all about how prisoners once worked on building a breakwater to make the bay safer for ships, and you can still see the remains of their hard work today.

During World War I, the gaol became a camp for people from Germany who were living in Australia. Now, it’s a museum where you can see what life was like in the old days. Feeling adventurous? Check out the nearby walking trails, like the Powder Magazine or Monument Hill tracks, for even more exploring!
