Discover & Get to Know

The Aquarium

Highlights

The Aquarium is a beautiful, secret swimming spot near Yallingup in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. It’s not a real aquarium like the ones with glass tanks—it’s a natural ocean rock pool filled with clear, blue water and lots of little sea creatures!

To get there, you go on a little adventure walk. There are two ways to reach it: one starts from a road called Canal Rocks Road and takes you through the bush, and the other is from Smiths Beach, where you walk along the coast with amazing views. The walk is about 20 to 30 minutes, so it’s a great way to stretch your legs.

When you arrive, you’ll see a big pool made by rocks and the ocean. The water is calm and safe to swim in, because the rocks around it protect it from big waves. It’s perfect for snorkeling, which means you can wear a mask and snorkel to look under the water. You might even spot colorful fish and maybe even a sneaky octopus!

There are also lots of little rock pools around, where kids can look for crabs, shells, and tiny sea animals. It’s like a treasure hunt!

Since it’s such a special place, it can get busy during holidays or weekends, so going early or on a weekday is a good idea. There aren’t any shops or toilets, so remember to bring your own water, snacks, and sunscreen—and take all your rubbish with you when you leave.

The Aquarium is a magical place where you can swim, explore, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Just remember to be careful on the rocks (they can be slippery!) and always stay safe in the water.

What You Need To know

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions.
  • Only swim where permitted and safe to do so. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
  • Swimming near or in the ocean can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges, rips and other dangers. The force of water can be incredibly strong and dangerous.
  • Stay safe and get the most out of your visit by preparing for natural hazards and other outdoor risks. You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of those in your care.
  • We recommend wearing suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
