Point Nepean Quarantine Station
Point Nepean Quarantine Station, Mornington Peninsula VIC
Steeped in a blend of serene coastal beauty and captivating human drama, the Point Nepean Quarantine Station is one of Victoria's most significant cultural heritage sites. Situated inside Point Nepean National Park on the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, this vast, open precinct looks out over the tranquil waters of Port Phillip Bay, offering a beautifully preserved window into Australia’s early migration, wartime, and medical history.
Established in 1852 following the tragic arrival of the migrant ship Ticonderoga—which was riddled with typhoid and scarlet fever—this facility was built to protect the booming, gold-rush population of Melbourne from infectious diseases. It remained a functioning quarantine hub until 1980, making it the second-oldest intact station of its kind in Australia.
Why It Deserves a Spot on Your Aussie Bucket List:
- Explore 50+ Heritage Buildings: Stroll through nearly 50 heritage-listed structures spanning over 150 years. Walk through the old hospital wards, the disinfecting complex, the administrative buildings, and the morgue, or trace the early history of European settlement at the 1845 limestone Shepherd’s Hut.
- Luxury Glamping & Campgrounds: You can now spend the night directly on these historic grounds. Stay at the pre-pitched canvas Discovery Tents campground, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature and heritage by the sea without the hassle of packing gear.
- Spot Marine Life at Observatory Point: Take a short, scenic stroll down Coles Track to Observatory Point. Pack a picnic to enjoy under the trees, explore the historic cattle jetty ruins, and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins swimming within the Ticonderoga Bay Sanctuary.
- Immersive Guided Walking Tours: To truly bring the history to life, join an interactive 90-minute tour or a lantern-lit night walk. Costumed guides recreate the atmospheric stories of the early passengers, soldiers, and refugees who briefly called this remote headland home.
How to Get There:
Located in Portsea, just a 90-minute day trip from Melbourne, the Quarantine Station is the perfect starting point for your park adventure. You can park at the visitor center, hire an e-bike, or jump onto the hop-on, hop-off Point Nepean shuttle bus to explore the station before heading further down Defence Road to explore the subterranean tunnels of Fort Nepean. Free to enter, it is an absolute must-visit for families, history buffs, and coastal explorers alike.
