Kangaroos at the Noosa Everglades 🩘

The Noosa Everglades, found just north of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, is a very special place where lots of amazing animals live. It’s one of only two places in the whole world with this kind of water system, and it’s full of Aussie wildlife like eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, possums, echidnas, and heaps of colourful birds.

If you visit Habitat Noosa Eco Camp, right beside Lake Cootharaba, you’ll probably spot lots of kangaroos (or “roos”) hopping around. They love the open grassy areas, shady trees, and peaceful lakeside spots. This area is like a safe home for kangaroos, where they can live freely and happily—and sometimes, they’ll even come close to say hello!

What Kangaroos Do Each Day

During the day, kangaroos like to relax in cool, shady spots to stay out of the hot sun. But when the sun starts to rise in the morning or set in the evening, that’s when they come out to eat grass, hop around, and hang out together. These are the best times to see them!

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might spot kangaroos wading into the lake in a line. People who saw this even called it “kangaroos walking on water”! A video of this amazing moment went viral online because it looked so cool.

The kangaroos often explore the campsites and nearby bushland. Locals say they make funny sounds—like clucking when they’re happy, or thumping their tails on the ground when they feel scared. It’s like their way of talking to each other!

Who Else Lives There?

Kangaroos aren’t the only animals you’ll find near the Everglades. This area is home to over 3,000 different types of animals, including:

  • Glossy black cockatoos and other rare birds
  • Flying foxes
  • Jabirus, sea eagles, and ospreys

In fact, nearly 40% of all bird species in Australia can be found here! So, if you love animals, this is a super exciting place to visit.

When and Where to Spot Them

The best times to see kangaroos are early in the morning or late in the afternoon when they’re most active. At Habitat Noosa Eco Camp, kangaroos often hop right past your tent as the sun rises—making it a perfect time for photos!

You can also go on a wildlife tour or a kayaking trip through the Everglades, where you might spot kangaroos munching on grass by the riverbanks.

Helping Kangaroos Stay Safe

These kangaroos aren’t just cute—they’re part of an important environment that needs to be protected. The Noosa Biosphere Reserve helps make sure the animals have safe places to live and grow.

Places like Habitat Noosa help protect the land and keep it clean and green. That way, kangaroos can keep living there happily, and future visitors (like you!) can see them too.

If you're visiting the Sunshine Coast and love animals, the kangaroos near the Noosa Everglades are a must-see. Whether they’re hopping by your campsite, relaxing by the lake, or just enjoying the sunshine, these friendly locals are sure to make your trip even more special.
