Mount Schank - Volcano Walk

Highlights

Ever wanted to visit a real volcano? Mount Schank may not erupt anymore, but it’s still a fascinating place to explore. Take a 2km walk around the rim of this dormant volcano and enjoy stunning views of Mount Gambier and the surrounding landscape. The volcano is over 100 metres tall and part of the Kanawinka Geopark—a special area showcasing Australia’s volcanic history.

If you’re feeling adventurous, walk down to the crater for a closer look, but be careful—the path isn’t maintained. Fun fact: Mount Schank is one of the youngest volcanic cones in South Australia, formed around 5,000 years ago!

After your walk, relax at the picnic area or check out the nearby heritage sites to learn more about the region’s geological wonders.

Adult Supervision Recommended

The path into the crater is steep and uneven, so adult supervision is recommended.
