Mount Gower
Ascend 875 meters above the Tasman Sea on Mount Gower, universally acclaimed as one of Australia’s ultimate day hikes. Scale sheer cliff edges using fixed ropes, traverse misty mist-wrapped cloud forests, and experience breathtaking 360-degree island views alongside endemic wildlife.
Mount Gower Summit Trek, Lord Howe Island: Conquer Australia’s Greatest Day Hike
Walking trail: 14km return | 8 to 10 hours return | Grade 5
Guide Requirement: Mandatory. Due to safety risks, high exposure, and environmental conservation, Mount Gower can only be climbed with an accredited island guide (e.g., Sea to Summit Expeditions or Lord Howe Environmental Tours).
Schedule & Costs: Hikes run on select weekdays (typically Mondays and Thursdays, weather permitting) and cost approximately $200 per person.
Standing resolutely on the southern tip of UNESCO World Heritage–listed Lord Howe Island, Mount Gower reaches 875 meters directly out of the Pacific Ocean. Consistently ranked among Australia’s top 10 day walks, this 14-kilometer return trek is a exhilarating mix of scrambling, cliff-side walking, and dense rainforest exploration. It’s an absolute rite of passage for avid hikers, adventure seekers, and nature enthusiasts looking to cross off a true bucket-list challenge.
A Wild, Multi-Terrain Summit Expedition
The 8-to-10-hour guided journey leads you through a series of dramatic ecosystems and adrenaline-pumping terrain:
- Lower Road Traverse: Edge along a narrow ledge etched into a vertical cliff wall with the ocean dropping hundreds of meters below—one of the most thrill-inducing sections of the track.
- Rope-Assisted Scrambles: Tackle near-vertical ascents across the 'Get Up Place' and Erskine Valley using fixed guide ropes and natural handholds.
- The Misty Cloud Forest: Emerge onto the summit plateau, an ancient mist-shrouded wonderland dripping in endemic mosses, giant tree ferns, and rare orchids found nowhere else on Earth.
Unrivaled Views & Endemic Wildlife Encounters
Reaching the summit rewards you with panoramic 360-degree vistas across Lord Howe Island’s brilliant turquoise lagoon, Mount Lidgbird, and out toward Ball’s Pyramid—the world’s tallest volcanic sea stack rising abruptly from the sea.
Along the trail, hikers frequently encounter the curious, flightless Lord Howe Woodhen and the famous Providence Petrel. Between March and November, these remarkable seabirds will drop directly out of the sky when called, landing at your feet in one of the ocean's most extraordinary wildlife interactions.
Aussie Bucket List Pro-Tips
- Book Far in Advance: Island visitor numbers are strictly capped at 400 at any one time, and guided trek spots fill months ahead. Secure your hike booking as soon as your flights are confirmed.
- Pack Gardening Gloves: The fixed rope sections can be harsh on bare hands, especially during the descent; lightweight grippy gloves make a world of difference.
- Warm Layers & Rain Protection: Even if it’s sunny at sea level, the summit cloud forest is often significantly cooler, damp, and windy. Pack a windproof/waterproof jacket and plenty of high-energy snacks.
