Kosciuszko Walk - Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko

The Kosciuszko Walk from Thredbo to Mount Kosciuszko is a must-do for adventurers visiting Kosciuszko National Park. Starting with a scenic chairlift ride, this 13km return trail takes you through Ramshead Range, past alpine wildflowers, and across the Snowy River, before a gradual climb to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain.

The summit offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Snowy Mountains and Victorian High Country. Pack a snack, enjoy the fresh alpine air, and relish the sense of achievement as you take in this iconic landscape. National Park fees apply.

What You Need To know

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions.
  • The track starts at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, which runs 9am to 4.30pm and takes 15mins. For chairlift prices visit the Thredbo website.
  • You can also walk up Merritts Nature Track from Thredbo Village to the top of the chairlift. This difficult 4km track takes around 2-3 hours uphill.
  • Alpine areas present special safety issues. Conditions can be extreme and may change rapidly, particularly in winter. It’s important to be prepared and find out how to stay safe in alpine areas.
  • Ensure to check the relevant website for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
