Perched on the rugged, windswept tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Fort Nepean is one of Victoria’s most spectacular historical icons and outdoor adventures. Located where the calm waters of Port Phillip meet the ferocious, crashing waves of the Southern Ocean (an infamous stretch of water known as 'The Rip'), this former military stronghold offers a fascinating step back in time, framed by panoramic 360-degree coastal views. Dating back to the 1880s, Fort Nepean was built to protect Melbourne's rich goldfields and evolved into a critical defensive post through both World Wars. In fact, it holds a unique place in global military history: the first shot of the British Empire in WWI, and Australia's very first shot of WWII, were both fired right here from Gun Emplacement 6.
