Fort Nepean
Fort Nepean, Point Nepean National Park VIC
Perched on the rugged, windswept tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Fort Nepean is one of Victoria’s most spectacular historical icons and outdoor adventures. Located where the calm waters of Port Phillip meet the ferocious, crashing waves of the Southern Ocean (an infamous stretch of water known as 'The Rip'), this former military stronghold offers a fascinating step back in time, framed by panoramic 360-degree coastal views. Dating back to the 1880s, Fort Nepean was built to protect Melbourne's rich goldfields and evolved into a critical defensive post through both World Wars. In fact, it holds a unique place in global military history: the first shot of the British Empire in WWI, and Australia's very first shot of WWII, were both fired right here from Gun Emplacement 6.
Why It Deserves a Spot on Your Aussie Bucket List:
- Explore the Underground Tunnels: Descend into a labyrinth of historic underground tunnels, ammunition magazines, engine houses, and bomb-proof rooms that connect the massive gun emplacements.
- Cheviot Beach Lookout: Take in the views of Cheviot Beach, the historic site of the SS Cheviot shipwreck and the infamous location where former Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared without a trace in 1967.
- Walk or Cycle the Coast: The journey to the fort is half the fun. Located inside Point Nepean National Park, you can tackle the scenic 3.5km walk from the Gunners Cottage car park, hire an e-bike, or hop on the park’s hop-on-hop-off shuttle service.
- The Historic Quarantine Station: Along the way, explore the nearby 1852 Quarantine Station, boasting nearly 50 heritage-listed heritage buildings that tell the early stories of European settlement and immigration in Victoria.
Just a 90-minute drive from Melbourne and a stone's throw from the seaside hubs of Portsea and Sorrento, Fort Nepean effortlessly marries raw natural beauty with riveting Australian history. It is a completely free, must-visit destination to add to your ultimate Mornington Peninsula road trip itinerary.
